In our workshop, we are currently testing handmade German Claripad clarinet pads during an overhaul of a vintage clarinet. In this short time-lapse video, you can see part of the overhaul process and the installation of the pads.
At Special Sax, we are constantly looking for high-quality materials that contribute to a stable seal, a comfortable playing feel, and reliable instrument operation.
Why Claripad?

Claripad produces handmade clarinet pads known for their precise finish and consistent quality. During this overhaul, we are testing how these pads perform in terms of:
- Air-tightness
- Stability of the seal
- Response and playing feel
- Durability
- Finish during installation
Especially for clarinets, a precise fit is essential for a well-playing instrument. Small deviations can directly affect response, intonation, and playing comfort.
Precision work in the workshop

Installing clarinet pads requires great precision and attention to detail. During the overhaul, the pads are carefully placed, centered, and adjusted for optimal sealing on the tone holes.
In addition, we inspect the mechanism, the fit of the keys, and the general condition of the instrument.
The initial impression of these Claripad pads is positive. Especially the consistent finish and stable fit are immediately noticeable during installation. The pads center nicely on the keys and can be precisely adjusted to the tone holes.
Also, when testing the seal and response, the pads feel stable and controlled. Of course, we will continue to evaluate these materials in practice for durability, playing feel, and long-term reliability.
Craftsmanship and material selection
At Special Sax, we believe that a good overhaul goes beyond just replacing parts. The combination of high-quality materials, precise assembly, and correct adjustment ultimately determines how an instrument plays.
That is why we regularly test different materials and techniques within our workshop.
